Frequently Asked Questions
Who is entitled to severance pay?
Under Korea's Employee Retirement Benefit Security Act, severance pay is required for employees with at least 1 year of continuous service who worked an average of 15 or more hours per week over a 4-week period. If your days of service are fewer than 365, you may not qualify for statutory severance pay — this calculator will display a notice in that case.
How is average daily wage calculated?
Average daily wage is the total wages received in the 3 months before the resignation date divided by the total number of calendar days in that 3-month period. Annual bonuses and leave allowances are included at only 3 months' worth (1/4 of the annual total). Unused leave payouts that arise solely upon termination are excluded from the calculation.
Why might this calculator's result differ from the actual payout?
In practice, there is a floor rule: ordinary wage applies if it exceeds the average wage. Which pay items count toward average wage also varies case by case. This calculator applies only the basic formula without these adjustments and is intended as a reference estimate only.
Can I use this together with the salary take-home pay calculator?
Yes. Use the Korea Salary Take-Home Pay Calculator to check your monthly net pay, then use this calculator to estimate your expected severance pay if you are planning to leave your job.
